More on CBD.

What is Cannabidiol?

CBD is just one of over a hundred identified cannabinoids (cannabis compounds) naturally found in the Cannabis Sativa L. plant. It is not to be confused with the more commonly known cannabinoid, THC. CBD has no psychotropic properties, is completely legal, and can have a multitude of benefits.

CBD is a legal food supplement in the UK and across Europe, the USA, Canada, Australia and Israel to name a few and is currently undergoing a wide range of scientific studies around the world examining the therapeutic, anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effects of the compound.

Interestingly we are seeing a lot of research on the effects of CBD on anxiety and depression. This has ascended from a several early studies that found CBD could be beneficial for reducing stress, anxiety and the symptoms of depression. The science is very much in its infancy, but it is certainly going in the right direction.

The Endocannabinoid System Explained.

CBD is so powerful when it comes to our health and wellness. It interacts with the Endocannabinoid System (ECS) within the human body. The ECS is made up of endocannabinoids, cannabinoid receptors and enzymes, and plays a vital role in promoting homeostasis and maintaining general health.

It is essentially a biochemical communication network, which helps to regulate the body’s physiology. Naturally occurring endocannabinoids and cannabinoids bind with receptors CB1 and CB2 in our cells to help modulate our physiological systems passing messages concerning functions such as memory, appetite and mood.

The most common analogy used to understand this interaction is thinking of it as a lock and key, with the receptors posing as the lock – securing access to important bodily systems – and the endocannabinoids as the keys.
